Looking for an active and scenic vacation? The Asheville area has plenty of open road and off-road trails for bikes of a different kind. If you don’t have a bicycle, plenty of shops in the Asheville area rent road bikes, mountain bikes, and cruisers.
We asked local biking expert Claudia Nix to provide tips for safe biking in the Asheville area and her favorite rides. In addition to her favorites, there's also the Blue Ridge Parkway which offers scenic road cycling rides for all skill levels:
- Ride 75 miles of paved road from Asheville to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (hard)
- For a shorter trip, take the Blue Ridge Parkway to Craggy Gardens for a well-loved lookout point. (moderate)
Thrill-seeking mountain bikers should check out these trails:
- Just South of Asheville, Bent Creek Mountain Bike Trail offers beginners and intermediate riders some tough, but short climbs and nice descents.
- Kitsuma Mountain Bike Trail in Black Mountain is for advanced riders. Once you arrive in Black Mountain look for old Highway US 70. The singletrack trail goes through Pisgah National Forest.
