Western North Carolina is a hub for unique and creative crafts, and it's a great place for some fall craft shopping.
There are numerous arts and crafts galleries, from 30-plus downtown to the working studios of the River Arts District, including Ariel Gallery, the Grovewood Gallery at the Grove Park Inn Resort and Spa, the Appalachian Craft Center, and more.
One of the first stops in any tour of Western North Carolina’s craft scene is the Folk Art Center and its Allanstand Craft Shop. Artists frequently demonstrate their traditional handcraft techniques during the weekend while the shop offers artwork ranging from mugs and jewelry to quilts and glassware for purchase.
Be sure to check out Western North Carolina Pottery: The Rodney Henderson Leftwich Collection in the upstairs galleries, on display from Sept. 22, 2007 to Jan. 13, 2008.
On Oct. 5, 2007, the Asheville Downtown Gallery Association will host its next gallery stroll, but if you miss it, pick up a brochure about downtown galleries and do your own. On the second weekend in November, visit for the River Arts District Studio Stroll for a chance to catch artists and craftsmen in their working studios.
Also, more than 30 artists will exhibit their work during the Cornucopia of Craft show at the Grove Arcade Harvest Festival, on view Sept. 30 through Oct. 31. The show will benefit the Grove Arcade ARTS & Heritage Gallery, which is another must-see for regional arts and crafts located in the historic Grove Arcade.
