Water Sports and Water Recreation

There’s more than one way to get wet.

Water sports and water recreation activities are diverse and extensive in the Western North Carolina mountains, from swimming holes to a natural waterslide, waterfalls and lakes.

Whitewater Rafting

Asheville is the envy of many cities with its beautiful mountains and proximity to great rafting locations such as the French Broad River, Nantahala River and Nolichucky River. Outdoor magazine named Asheville the top whitewater destination in the U.S.

It’s not a coincidence that rafting companies such as Nantahala Outdoor Center, Wildwater Ltd. Rafting, and Huck Finn Rafting Adventures have chosen to make the region their home.

The French Broad River’s long, peaceful stretches can accommodate family raft rides, while its whitewater rapids are exciting for kayaks and canoe enthusiasts. The wide river winds through Pisgah National Forest mountainside, offering eight miles of small and large rapids, with occasional placid pools perfect for swimming.

The Nantahala River is ideal for families and beginners. The river meanders through the beautiful Nantahala Gorge, and even the most inexperienced paddler will enjoy this beautiful river that is dam-controlled, making water releases regular and predictable.

Adventurous rafters can challenge the fast-moving Nolichucky River, located near Spruce Pine and Burnsville, N.C. Hemmed in by one of the steepest and most beautiful gorges in North Carolina, the river requires considerable maneuvering around rocks and boulders to get through its many rapids and pools as it runs through the Pisgah and Cherokee National Forests.

Swimming Holes

The Carolina Hemlock Campground (along the South Toe River) is a good pit stop for visitors to cool off. The mountain-cold water cascades from Mt. Mitchell, the highest peak in the Eastern U.S., and there are large slabs of rocks ideal for sunbathing.

From Asheville follow the Blue Ridge Parkway to Route 80 north to Carolina Hemlock campground or head north on U.S. 19 to Route 80 south.

Green River is another popular swimming hole. Tube rentals are also available nearby. Head east on I-26 from Asheville to Saluda. Take Exit 28 and head north on Holbert Cove Road to Green River Cove Road. Turn left. The swimming area is at the bottom on the left.

Natural Waterslide

Sliding Rock – A Natural Water Slide is a slippery rock that forms a mountain waterslide in the Pisgah National Forest on U.S. 276 near Asheville. The 60-foot, flat, sloping boulder is a perfect launching pad for thousands of visitors every year. Fueled by 11,000 gallons of water pumped down the rock each minute, Sliding Rock is a perfect place for chlorine-free fun.

(While you’re in the area, check out Looking Glass Falls, also on U.S. 276. The 60-foot waterfall is stunning and the wading pool below is perfect for children.)

Waterfalls

Many trails along the Blue Ridge Parkway lead to waterfalls, depending on the season and rainfall conditions. The Graveyard Fields Loop, found at Blue Ridge Parkway Milepost 419, allows easy access to a number of waterfalls flowing from Yellowstone Prong. The trails at Graveyard Fields are well mapped, but can become slippery in wet conditions.

The Davidson and French Broad Rivers and their tributaries fuel more than 250 breathtaking waterfalls and 200 miles of cool, clear mountain streams in Transylvania County. To experience some of the many breathtaking views, follow the Blue Ridge Parkway south from Asheville to N.C. 215. Take 215 south to U.S. 64 and continue west through Lake Toxaway, Sapphire, Cashiers and Highlands.

Follow 64 through the colorful Cullasaja Gorge where numerous waterfalls – including Bridal Veil Falls, Dry Falls and majestic Cullasaja Falls – cascade close to the highway. In Franklin, turn north on U.S. Highway 441 and head to Dillsboro. From there, hop on U.S. Highway 23 and drive straight back to Asheville.

Lakes

Visit the famous mountain beach at Beach at Lake Lure, setting of the film Dirty Dancing. You won’t be able to body surf the waves, but the view of Chimney Rock is stunning and boat tours explore the lake several times a day. From Asheville, follow US 74 approximately 20 miles to Lake Lure.

Lake Powhattan in the Bent Creek area in the Pisgah National Forest is perfect for a swim after a hike or mountain bike ride along the trails. Take Exit 33 (old Exit 2) off I-26 and head past the Biltmore Square Mall. Follow signs for Lake Powhattan in the Bent Creek area.
