Beyond Landscape- Painting the Soul of the Landscape

Nationally known abstract artist, Jonas Gerard, continues the development of his abstracted impressions of the majestic peaks surrounding Asheville with a new body of work. On Friday, October 3, 2008 Beyond Landscape will open at Jonas Gerard Fine Art in the River Arts District of Asheville, NC. An opening reception follows on Friday, October 10th from 5 to 7 pm. The next day, Saturday, October 11, 2008, Gerard will be painting live in his studio adjoining the Gallery at 2:00 p.m. As a token of appreciation for the continued success of his Asheville Gallery, Jonas will be donating 20 percent of the sales that occur at the opening reception to Arts for Life. This organization brings art healing programs to children with serious illnesses in North Carolina hospitals. Going deeper in to the very soul of the land, his impressions can open the deepest senses and emotions. Without struggle Jonas transforms his powerful yet delicate abstract force through unusual compositions of trees, mountains and lakes. His freedom of expression creates movement that pulses in every colorful brush stroke. It’s a whole new approach to painting and often people get that strange feeling when they look at it. . . . That’s when it begins. When the painting touches someone’s heart beyond the visual there is a soul to soul communication. Connecting to the experience, one’s eyes and imagination cannot stop at just what is seen. You will then go beyond the landscape.

Come help us celebrate, and sample some of the most delicious authentic Jewish recipes, and learn what we are all about. A positive outlook, a bias toward learning, social justice, helping those less fortunate, ethical living, lots of smiling, and enjoying great food – these are all aspects of being Jewish.

On Friday evening The Afromotive will take the stage with special guest performers Laura Reed and Debrissa McKinney; Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad and DJ Bowie will open Friday evening. Saturday's special opening acts are Big Sam's Funky Nation and Cadillac Jones. Doors open at 9pm for these 21+ shows, $15 for each night or $25 for both nights. Based in Asheville, NC, the Afromotive stays true to the elements that started afrobeat music- West African rhythms, song forms, and instrumentation- while bringing the music to the 21st Century through strong song writing, improvisation, and heavy beats. A fan once said, “It’s sounds like James Brown’s band went to Africa.” Bringing funk music back to its African roots is precisely what the Afromotive is doing with their style of high energy poly-rhythmic afrobeat music. Thirty-third generation djembe player Adama Dembele from Cote d‘Ivoire, West Africa brings his vast musical knowledge and touring experience to the Afromotive. These traditional West African rhythms combined with a mentality for upbeat funk music is what the Afromotive brings to its audiences. Other instrumentalists have been trained in funk, jazz, and classical music as well as extensively studying the rhythms of West Africa; collectively they have created a sound that crosses musical and ethnic boundaries. www.theafromotive.com www.myspace.com/theafromotive

Art Break: William Christenberry: Site/Possession

Come learn about the exhibition William Christenberry: Site/Possession from the Asheville Art Museum's curatorial staff. You are sure to enjoy this insider's look at Christenberry's work, so join us! This exhibition reveals the complexity of the artist’s very personal investigation of the both the American South and his own family heritage. Christenberry’s theme is the narrative of place. He photographs ramshackle buildings, weathered commercial signs, lonely back roads, white-washed churches and decorated graves. Dutifully returning to the same locations annually, the green barn and the Bar-B-Q Inn, among others, Christenberry fulfills a personal ritual and documents the physical changes brought on by the passing of time. In addition to 50 drawings, the exhibition also features paintings, photographs, constructions and the Klan Room Tableau. The work included shows the many sides of rural Alabama, both positive and negative, and includes many drawings from the artist’s collection that have not been previously exhibited.

Hawkins will explore how the rapid change of the facts governing the landscape and natural resources threaten to overwhelm the opportunity we have for an orderly cultural shift that provides a common sense approach to the possibility of global warming on many parallel fronts, from water, community values and taxes to foreign oil, farming and more.

Art Break: Expectant Gaze - Art from the Eye and Mind Docent-Led Tour

Come tour the Asheville Art Museum exhibition Expectant Gaze — Art from the Eye and Mind guided by a member of the Asheville Art Museum Docents. Expectant Gaze — Art from the Eye and Mind presents works from the permanent collection that probe art’s two oldest and most essential functions: rendering the visual world and envisioning new possibilities for experiencing it. This exhibition juxtaposes works in a range of media making these primary functions of art easier to consider. Works that seem realistic may be more heavily weighted toward the goal of depiction, while art considered abstract may be closer to the task of calling up the purely imaginary, but both exist along the same continuum. Bringing such seemingly disparate objects together opens new avenues for exploration, understanding and inspiration. A new selection of works, including some recent acquisitions, are now on view, offering new opportunities to experience the permanent collection.
